Difference between air conditioner and heat pump

For every period of the year there is a solution to get your house at the perfect temperature. But between what should you choose: an air conditioner or a heat pump? And is there a difference at all?

What is the difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump?

An air conditioner is a heat pump, more specifically an air-to-air heat pump. There is a misconception that air conditioners can only serve to cool rooms. Thanks to the heat pump technology, you can also perfectly heat your home with air conditioning.

In addition to air-to-air heat pumps, there are of course also other types of heat pumps. We will briefly discuss these later to make it clear to you how you differ.

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump extracts heat from its environment and displaces the extracted heat. A simple example is your refrigerator. Here the heat is extracted from the inside, giving you a cool fridge, and then the hot air is blown out through the back.

A heat pump does all this because of a refrigerant. With this refrigerant, evaporation and condensation are one of the most used principles. During evaporation, the refrigerant extracts heat from the room, and during condensation, it releases the heat. Let’s put it simply. During heating, the refrigerant condenses, causing it to release its heat into your room. During cooling, the opposite happens.

Heat pumps use renewable energy in your environment to cool/heat your home or water. It does this in a very sustainable way by using electricity. If you can also obtain the generation of this electricity via solar panels, you can cool or heat your house completely CO2 neutral. This immediately explains the success of the heat pump!

What are the types of heat pumps?

  • Air-to-air heat pump: this heat pump extracts heat from outside or indoor air and brings it into the home as heat air.
  • Geothermal or ground-water heat pump: this type of heat pump extracts water from the soil or groundwater. For this purpose, a horizontal or vertical pipe network is placed in the ground. The investment cost is therefore a lot higher, but the returns are higher than other types of heat pumps, because the ground temperature has few temperature fluctuations. The collected heat is released into the water of the central heating system.
  • Air-water heat pump: this heat pump extracts heat from outside or indoor air and releases it into the water of the central heating.
  • Hybrid heat pump: this is a heat pump supported by a heating boiler.

What type of heat pump is an air conditioner?

An air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. The air conditioner will remove the heat from your room by condensing the refrigerant. Then it carries the heat air out through the outdoor unit. In winter, the air conditioning can work in reverse and can heat your room nicely and snugly via evaporation.
