How does a split aircon work?

Always wanted to know how a split air conditioner works? We'll guide you through the different components of a split aircon and explain some of the most common asked questions. Read more to sharpen up your knowledge on aircons.

What is a split air conditioner?

A split air conditioner is used to cool, heat, and clean your indoor air. A split aircon contains 2 separate units: an indoor evaporating unit and an outdoor compressor unit. The system uses a refrigerant that can absorb the heat from a room with the indoor unit. After which, it transfers the heat to the outdoor unit through a system of pipes filled with refrigerant.

How does a split aircon work?

Refrigeration Cycle

A split aircon uses the refrigeration cycle to cool or heat your room. This cycle is quite like your fridge at home. The refrigeration cycle has 5 main components:

  • Refrigerant (in both your indoor and outdoor aircon unit)
  • Compressor (in your outdoor unit)
  • Condenser (in your outdoor unit)
  • Evaporator (in your indoor unit)
  • Expansion Valve (in both)

Refrigerant

The refrigerant acts as a transfer agent of calories throughout your closed-loop system. Find out why Verda Vento only uses R32 refrigerant for their aircons.

Compressor

The compressor is the engine of your aircon and consumes the most electricity in your HVAC. Choose for an energy efficient aircon of Verda Vento to reduce your energy consumption.

When the low-pressure gas refrigerant reaches the compressor, it is being compressed into a high-pressure gas so the heat can be expelled outside. Afterwards, it reaches the next component: the condenser.

Condenser

The condenser will condense the refrigerant. Together with a fan it will allow the high-pressure gas to release its heat to the atmosphere outside and cool down. The refrigerant will then condense to a liquid state.

The Evaporator

An example of an evaporator

Once the liquid refrigerant reaches the evaporator it will absorb heat from your room and turn into a gas after which the complete process is repeated until your room reaches the desired temperature.

Expansion Valve

The expansion valve allows the cycle to be restarted as it adjusts the pressure of the refrigerant.

Verda Vento only offers inverter heat pump systems. This means that above cycle can also be reversed and allows you to both cool and heat your room.

Type of split systems

Single Split System

Single split system: a single split system consists out of one outdoor and one indoor and is intended to air condition only 1 room

Multi-split system

Multi-split system: a multi split system consists out of one outdoor that can be connected to 5 indoor units which allows you to air condition up to 5 rooms.
